Chapter Seven

Tobey clutched the large army-green duffel bag to his chest. It contained his clothes, some paperbacks, photos, his tablet and grooming kit. The pack also held a stuffed toy giraffe his mom had bought him from the Boise zoo when he was a kid. He’d impulsively grabbed it off his dresser as he’d hurried to get away from his family for good. The small, somewhat ratty animal represented one of the few happier times he’d had with them.

His phone with less than two minutes left on it was stuffed in the front pocket of his jeans, so he had all of his possessions with him. He hadn’t wanted to leave his belongings in the cargo hold for the trip to LA since it contained everything he owned. While life would go on if his things were to be lost, he needed the comfort of something physical to hold on to that was his. Something tangible.

Tobey strained his neck as he took in the familiar skyline of Los Angeles. He’d become increasingly calmer the farther away he’d traveled from Boise. I wonder if I’ll ever go back again? He hadn’t been close to anyone in his family for a long time. Even if his father was the most openly volatile toward him, the others, including his mom, seemed to barely tolerate his presence.

Oh no you don’t. No getting weepy five minutes before arrival.

His tears weren’t due to the mistreatment from his family, not specifically. It was the knowledge that he was no longer in their lives and that they didn’t care. If anything, it was probably a relief that he wouldn’t be disgracing them with his presence anymore. Even if his heart had been broken by Hunter, it was still better than being back in Idaho where his family despised him.

I don’t think Hunter despises me. He always picked me to scene with him more than anyone else. There was something special between us, a connection… Tobey growled loud enough that the old woman in the seat in front of him jerked her head around and glared. He didn’t begrudge her that. If he could, he would’ve glared at himself. He would also tell himself to quit wishing he hadn’t said anything to Derek about not letting Hunter come and get him.

Yeah. He was a masochist all right. Loved to torture himself. If he hadn’t pleaded with Derek to keep Hunter away, then he would’ve been agonizing for the entire bus trip over whether Hunter might show up.

The bus jounced and wobbled its way into the station, the compression brakes groaning as the vehicle rolled to a stop with one final jerk. His heart rate had been steadily accelerating for the previous hour as he’d begun to recognize the sights from his original foray to California. He’d tried to sit as close to the front as possible, but the old woman and a family with two small children across the aisle had gotten the first few rows.

As soon as the exit doors slid open, Tobey shot from his seat.
